Tina L., CU Succeed Student, Fall 2019

As a senior, I have been able to experience a variety of classes throughout my four years of high school. All of them had their pros and cons, but there are some classes that remain as my favorites even today. My first semester in political science was an extremely positive experience that I have enjoyed immensely.

One of the things that I found most enjoyable about class was its small size. Only having around nine people in our class made me feel more comfortable with a small group of people, and made it easier for my voice to be heard. My classmates were extremely personable people, and that made our class discussions fun and engaging. The small size was especially useful when doing the play, as I was comfortable enough to stand in front of them and have fun.

Another pro of Political Science was that the class materials were actually interesting and understandable. I loathe classes in which I have to read complex materials that are hardly relevant in today’s society, but the reading material in Political Science allowed me understand problems that different groups of people face today. It has given me a new perspective and challenged the views that I had gleaned from the media. I have learned that there are different perspectives to every event, and things are not always what the media portrays them at.

Furthermore, the class was pleasant as I was able to complete my workload and had a teacher that prioritized my mental health above my assignments. Being able to ask for extensions when needed and focus on taking care of myself was beneficial to me over the semester, as I was able to turn in better quality work and manage my time better. The work itself was also not bad and had good guidelines on what to do. My favorite part of the class was the play. It was exciting yet educational at the same time. It also allowed my group and I creative control over what we wanted to do. I was able to learn and take away a lot of things from Political Science, and it is definitely one of my favorite classes this year.
